Three roll mill: definition, operation, and characteristics
In order to meet commercial product specifications related to particle size, the use of three roll mills, roll crushers, or roller mills are most common. They consist of rolls or cylinders, of equal diameter and length, placed parallel to each other in a horizontal or inclined position.
They act by using the weight of the rolls to impact, press, compress, and crush the material during rotation. The coefficient of friction between the material to be reduced and the roller surface is one of the main parameters influencing the degree of reduction achieved.
Three roll mills have heat exchange systems that allow the rolls to be heated or cooled depending on the type of process. They also have hydraulic or manual adjustments to regulate their spacing and control the size of the resulting particles. In addition, the rollers can be smooth or toothed, depending on the type of material to be treated and the expected results.
Three roll mill applications

Functionally, the first roll produces a primary grind, usually by impact and compression against a crusher plate. The product feeds the secondary stage, achieving a finer grind by the action of the remaining two rolls.
These mills are mainly used when a fine grinding of the product is required. In the case of the chemical industry, they can be used for the preparation of paint pigments or printing inks. They are also widely used in the cosmetics industry.
Smooth three roller mills are used in the preparation of malt, for the brewing of craft beer. They are also used for the production of cornflakes and semi-liquid chocolate. Toothed three roll mills are used in the processing of harder material, such as in the mining and construction industry.
