Industrial extrusion machines: description and their functions

Extrusion is the process of moulding a material by forcing it through a nozzle using a worm screw. The process is carried out with the help of an extruder. These screws serve to mix, compact, possibly melt, and ultimately shape the material being processed. Typically, the material is forced through a perforated die, resulting in the production of strands that can be cut into customized lengths as needed. Extruders are capable of generating high pressures (> 1,000 bar) and elevated temperatures, often allowing for cooling or tempering.

From plastics, metals, ceramics, biomass or foodstuffs, everything is prone to be moulded with the work of an extruder machine. They are very versatile equipment because of the diversity of functions they perform. In addition to conveying, they can melt, compress, degas, mould and cut the material. Food extruders can also agglomerate, dehydrate, gelatinise, homogenise, sterilise, denature protein and cook, to deliver a wide variety of products.
