Introducing Batch Reactors and Semi-Batch Reactors
Batch reactors come in various sizes and serve for biological or chemical reactions. When these reactions need to occur batch by batch, companies utilize a batch reactor. The necessary components for the reaction or fermentation are then added to the tank once. This sets apart this type of reactor from continuous reactors, to which components are continuously supplied. Typical batch reactors operate sequentially. They are also known as Sequential Batch Reactors - or SBRs for short. If the desired reactions in the tank require both a one-time charge and continuous addition of further substances, a semi-batch reactor is required. The construction of most of these reactors is simple. Their tank usually has only two openings for adding the reactants and withdrawing the finished reaction product. Additionally, a stirring mechanism is often built in. Finally, the temperature required for the reaction inside can be regulated via different jackets around the tank that transport fluids. Additional tank ventilation may also be necessary.
Where Batch or Semi-Batch Reactors are Used
An important application area for a batch reactor is wastewater treatment. Batch reactors play a role in the activated sludge process in all wastewater treatment plants. Initially, the reactors receive a feed of dense sludge, in which many bacteria live and can clean water. The bacteria cultures feed on the impurities in the wastewater that is later supplied to the reactor tank. This makes a significant contribution to the wastewater treatment process with batch or semi-batch reactors. Other bacteria, yeast, or fungi are indispensable for food production through fermentation - for example, in the production of bread, yogurt, cheese, or even beer and wine. Microbial fermentation is required everywhere here, often taking place in various batch reactors. Foeth continuously stocks a larger selection of these reactors for different purposes or in various sizes. As usual from Foeth, all batch reactors are tested or refurbished and can be put into use immediately.
