How a Nautamix helical mixer works

Nautamixers operate as convective mixers in a conical housing, with the mixing result being created by various circulation flows. In a Nauta® mixer, three of these flows work together. The first is created as an axial movement through the mixer's screw. A second radial mixing movement is formed by the conical shape of the housing, and the third movement - a tangential mixing movement - results from the circular movement of the swivel arm, on which the screw also rotates inside the housing. The mixer operates as a batch mixer. It is manually, mechanically, or pneumatically filled from the top, either by hand, with the use of a big bag, or by a mechanical or pneumatic method. The mixing times depend on the batch size, mixing accuracy, and of course the nature of the materials to be mixed. Afterwards, the mixer can be manually or mechanically emptied from the bottom to further process the finished mixture. The basic principle of Nauta® mixers is over 80 years old. It was invented by the Dutchman J.E. Nauta, who developed the first mixer of this type in 1939. His invention led to the creation of the company Nautamix, which was acquired by Hosokawa Micron B.V. in 1982. Since then, mixers of this type have been continuously developed here - but also by other companies who manufacture and improve helical mixers of this type.

Areas of application for a Nautamix

Nautamixers are used in numerous industries and companies worldwide. They are particularly used for mixing materials that require gentle handling and must not be damaged under any circumstances. This is prevented by the low speeds at which these mixers operate. Their screw rotates at only around 70 rpm, and their swivel arm makes only one or two revolutions per minute. With these specifications, a Nauta® mixer is also suitable for use in potentially explosive environments according to ATEX directives. In addition to the gentle mixing of liquids, pastes, powders, or slurries, there are several other applications for mixers based on the Nauta® principle: coatings, powder wetting, drying with additional heat supply, or as stirring silos for supplying dryers. These mixers are available in many different volume sizes for all applications. These range from a few hundred liters to up to 100,000 liters. However, only a few companies require such sizes. Therefore, you will mostly find used mixers of small or medium size here with us.
