Function of a Disc Centrifuge
In many industrial applications, a disc centrifuge serves to separate suspensions into their solid and liquid components. It's also possible to separate emulsions into their liquid components. The separator is suitable for continuous operation, as the medium to be separated can flow in continuously while the liquid is discharged. There are different solutions for removing the separated solids. Some models automatically discharge them, while others require manual removal. A disc centrifuge is used, for example, where liquids need to be clarified. It can also concentrate emulsions by separating some of the lighter liquid. Overall, there are various applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
Operation of a Disc Separator
A disc separator separates mixtures of substances using centrifugal force in combination with the different inertias of the individual components and gravity. The disc centrifuge consists of a vertically mounted, rotating drum into which the mixture is fed from above. It first flows into a tubular distributor and is accelerated there by the rotational movement. The suspension or emulsion then enters the disc area through openings in the distributor wall. There are several discs stacked on top of each other in this area, with some distance between them. However, these discs are not flat but inclined downward and have a cone-like shape. The mixture is further accelerated there, causing the heavier particles to collide with the discs and then sink to the bottom. The lighter liquid can flow out from the top.
Selecting the Right Disc Separator
When selecting a disc centrifuge, ensure that it is suitable for the intended application area. For example, using it in the food industry requires certain requirements for materials in contact with food. Other criteria include the volume of the container and its maximum speed. Especially for a disc separator, the number, size, and arrangement of the discs are important properties, as they affect the speed, thoroughness, and efficiency of the separation process. Different technologies are also used for the inlet and outlet of the mixtures or the separated components. Also, consider the dimensions in height and width that the centrifuge can have so that you can find a secure place for it in your company. There are both very large centrifuges and portable models.
