Glass-lined Reactors

Glass-lined reactors, the solution for corrosive mixtures

Reactors are indispensable in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, but many reactions involve potentially corrosive mixtures, which require special conditions for the equipment. In these cases, surface coatings are used to prevent damage and hazards in the processing operations. At Foeth we have a large inventory of glass-lined reactors of well-known brands, such as De Dietrich and Büchi Glass, and in top condition.

Definition of glass-lined industrial chemical reactors

Glass-lined reactors perform the same functions as conventional chemical reactors. They consist of a closed cylindrical vessel, where the conditions of pressure, temperature, and composition are adjusted to allow chemical reactions to occur at the set rate and speed. In addition, they must take into account the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the reaction.

The reactor may contain a stirrer, with different drive systems, as well as baffles, thermowells, and double walls for heat supply or removal. The additional feature of the glass-lined industrial chemical reactor is that it has a special coating on the walls and all internal components, which protects it against corrosion.

Features of glass lined reactors

One of the peculiarities of glass-lined reactor coatings is that manufacturers develop their own glass formulations, which offer excellent resistance to corrosion, abrasion, sudden temperature changes, and even mechanical shocks. All these characteristics make them suitable for processes where highly corrosive products, such as concentrated sulphuric acid, are used. In addition, the surface of the glass becomes impermeable to the effects of catalysts and contaminants that may be generated.

The coating process is carried out in several stages, in which the glass powder suspension is sprayed onto the surfaces to be coated. The parts are dried and fired in a kiln at temperatures conducive to the melting of the material. The cycle can be repeated until the required glass layer thickness is achieved and meets the recommended quality tests for industrial chemical reactors.

Key properties of glass-lined industrial chemical reactors

In glass-lined reactors, the glass-lined coating on a steel backing creates an exceptionally corrosion-resistant vessel. They have a very high tolerance to the action of strong acids. They are very easy to clean, as the glass-lined finish is non-stick. Due to their characteristics, they are less resistant to the action of high pressure, compared to stainless steel reactors. The development of high-impact resistance has been achieved: the lower the internal stress of the glass layer, the better the elasticity achieved. In addition, the higher the flexural and compressive strength, the higher the hardness and impact resistance.
