What are industrial peristaltic pumps?

Peristaltic pumps are positive displacement machines used in processes where hygienic pumping conditions must be controlled to ensure that there is no possibility of contamination. The fluid is conveyed through a flexible tube, which is repeatedly compressed by a rotor that performs regular movements.

Industrial peristaltic pumps, despite being positive displacement devices, do not have pistons, valves, or any sealing elements, ensuring that the fluid does not come into contact with the pump internals. Thanks to their configuration and operation, they are ideal for pumping aggressive or abrasive liquids (wastewater, cement, inks), acids, or fluids containing suspended solids (paper pulp, ground fruit, polymer resins). Also in the case of very viscous or shear-sensitive liquids (emulsions, vegetable oils).

Peristaltic pump: operation

The fluid in peristaltic pumps is contained in a flexible tube that runs through the main body of the pump so that it never comes into contact with other elements; hence its preference for handling clean or sterile fluids.

A rotor, containing a variable number of rollers, which extends around the circumference of the pump body, compresses the tube, driving its contents. As the rotor turns, the pressurised part of the tube closes, forcing the fluid to move. As the rotor moves towards the end, the initial tube reopens, returning to its natural state and restoring operation. This repetitive motion induces pumping of the fluid.

Types of industrial peristaltic pumps

There are basically two types of peristaltic pumps:

  • High-pressure peristaltic pumps: they can operate at 16 bar; they are also known as "hose pumps" as they work with reinforced flexible tubing to resist the repetitive compression process during operation. The casing contains lubricating fluid, which prevents abrasion of the outside of the tube and promotes heat dissipation.

  • Low-pressure peristaltic pumps or roller pumps: use rollers to compress the fluid inside a flexible tube. Operation is dry, although the outside of the hose and rollers may be coated with some silicone grease. They can withstand normal operating pressures up to 4 bar, although they are designed for 8 bar pressure.
