Chemical dosing pumps - definition
In many industrial chemical processes, such as water treatment or in oil production it is necessary to ensure the content of certain components in the streams. These are important to ensure that the production or transfer of fluids is carried out smoothly.
The amount of components to be dosed depend on certain properties of the process streams, such as their flow rate, or on the quality of a particular parameter. Because of the variability in the proportions and the volume to be dosed, which is usually very small, the process is carried out with chemical dosing pumps.
Dosing pumps are small positive displacement pumps that allow the chemical component to be precisely metered into the process streams.
Due to process variables, these pumps must allow adjustment of the injection flow in a linear fashion and their design must ensure repeatability and volume displacement pressure under all conditions.
Types of dosing pumps available from Foeth
The main dosing pumps handled in the chemical industry are:
Membrane or diaphragm pump: is a system that operates alternately by the thrust of a diaphragm, driven by mechanical or hydraulic means. These vary by alternately increasing and decreasing the volume of the chamber. The operation of check valves controls the movement of the fluid, facilitating dosing. Due to their characteristics, they are not susceptible to leakage, so they can handle corrosive chemicals, with solid particles or any other hazardous substances.
Piston pumps: are also common in this type of application. They employ a similar mechanism, using a piston, rather than a diaphragm, to dispense the chemical. They are ideal for handling chemicals with no solids content and high pressure operations.
