How do centrifugal pumps work?

As the name would suggest, a centrifugal pump uses centrifugal forces to pump a liquid. But how do centrifugal pumps work exactly? In its simplest form, a centrifugal pump uses an impeller that can rotate inside a pump housing. As the impeller rotates, the fluid is forced toward the outer perimeter of the impeller, generating pressure and kinetic energy before flowing into the pressure line. At the same time, negative pressure is created in the centre of the impeller, this causes new fluid to flow from the suction line into the impeller. Here the cycle begins again and the pump flow remains continuous. A centrifugal pump is generally not self-priming and thus depends on the fluid inside to function. Also, liquids with too high a viscosity are not suitable for the centrifugal pump. The applications of centrifugal pumps are mainly liquids or a mixture of liquid and gas, such as: Beer, cream, fats, juices, beverages or chemical liquids such as detergents and other solutions.

Are dosing pumps and metering pumps the same thing?

Our consultants often get the question whether a centrifugal pump can be used as a dosing pump. This is unfortunately not the case, these two types of pumps are not the same. If you are specifically looking for a dosing pump, we have another overview with our stock of dosing pumps. You can find it here.

What are the advantages of centrifugal pumps?

Many companies within the process industry choose centrifugal pumps, and that's not surprising. Centrifugal pumps are a lot more compact than pumps with a similar flow volume, making them usable in more places without having to sacrifice pump volume. Because a centrifugal pump has few moving parts, operation is also consistent and maintenance costs remain low. In addition, their operation is relatively simple and the purchase price is lower compared to other pump types. At Foeth, purchase prices are even lower because we sell used centrifugal pumps. Our machines are as good as new, but save you a lot of money. Would you like to know more about the operation or benefits of centrifugal pumps? Then please contact our consultants.
