Sand mills
Get a sand mill for wet grinding and dispersion
The reduction and dispersion of a solid in a viscous or pasty liquid medium is a common operation in the chemical and paint industry. At Foeth, we have second-hand horizontal and vertical sand mills available, in the best operating condition and ideal for these processes. These sand mills are manufactured by well-known brands in the European market, such as Buhler, Netzsch, VMA Getzmann, and Fryma, among many others. You can visit our facilities in Barneveld, The Netherlands, to see the variety of mills available for your processes. You can also request a quotation from our website, we prepare them without obligation. We export all over the world.

Sand mill: definition and principle of operation
The sand mill is designed to grind and disperse solid materials, which may contain pigments or thickeners, into a liquid phase that wets the material. It consists of a cylindrical housing with a central shaft fitted with discs or drive arms, which agitate or move a series of small ceramic, glass, or metal balls. These balls collide with each other and against the housing to reduce the material to a very fine, uniform particle size. A screen retains the grinding media when the finished product is discharged. Typically, the size of the grinding media varies between 2.5 and 0.3 mm to achieve a particle size of microns or nanometres.
The sand mill is a ball mill featuring an agitator. The equipment operates in a similar way, but in the first case the operation is in a wet medium and the grinding media are up to ten times smaller than those used in ball mills. It is mainly used in the dispersion and grinding of pigments in the production process of inks, paints, and coatings; where the pigments must be ground with stabilisers and other components before adding the continuous phase that will serve as a base.
Particle size reduction in the industrial ball mill is due to the high hydraulic and shear forces between the grinding elements, which promotes fine grinding of the solid material and its dispersion.
Industrial sand mill: stages of the grinding process
When looking for a used sand mill for your process, please note that the level of grinding achieved by these machines is determined mainly by the size of the grinding elements, the shaft speed, and the properties of the dispersion medium. Also important is the means of removing the heat that is generated.
Achieving good dispersion is achieved in three stages:
Wetting: the solid phase comes into contact with the process liquid.
Grinding: the solids are broken up by mechanical forces.
Dispersing: the wet solid particles migrate in the liquid medium to produce a homogeneous and stable suspension over time.
