Learn more about jet mills

Jet mills, often referred to as strahlmühlen in German, grind materials without the use of mechanical tools like other types of mills. The grinding process is solely achieved through a gas or air stream. Special nozzles introduce gas or air into the grinding chamber at high velocities. This causes the particles of the material to collide with each other, continuously reducing their size. This grinding method is particularly effective for hard materials. Additionally, there is no mechanical wear on grinding tools, which saves time and costs that would normally be spent on regularly replacing such components. Once the desired particle size is achieved, a separator or filter separates the air or gas from the ground material, which can then be further processed. This basic principle is utilized in various types of mills today, such as spiral jet mills or opposed jet mills. Different orientations of particle acceleration or collision allow for optimal grinding of different materials.

Applications of a jet mill

Lufstrahlmühlen achieve very high grinding fineness, often less than 10 micrometers. Depending on the type or settings, they are suitable for grinding in a range of 0.1 to 100 micrometers. These process machines can handle over 1000 kilograms of material per hour for coarse grinding around 100 micrometers, or just a few grams for fine grinding. Jet milling is particularly used for very dry or hard materials that need to be ground into fine particles without sacrificing their chemical purity. An important application example can be found in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of medications and the processing of their ingredients. Companies also use jet mills for the production of aluminum oxide, which is used in modern ceramics, for example. Lastly, these mills are a crucial tool in digitization, as without them, the grinding of silicon for semiconductor technology would be unthinkable.
