Effective particle size reduction with industrial mills
Particle size reduction is one of the fundamental unit operations in the food, pharmaceutical, agri-food, and chemical industries. At Foeth we have a large stock of pre-owned mills and grinders available for a large variety of purposes, all in optimal operating condition. These are equipment from well-known brands such as Bauermeister, Hosokawa Alpine (Micron/Mikropul), Peppink, Buhler, Condux (Netzsch), Apex, Pallmann, Kemutec (KEK, Gardner), Fryma Koruma and KERA, among many others.

Industrial mill: definition and selection principle
Mills (or grinders) are equipment used to reduce the size of solid particles. They are also used to achieve homogeneous mixtures or suspensions of particles. To achieve this objective, they use different types of forces such as compression, impact, attrition and shear, depending mainly on the characteristics of the material.
The selection of the type of industrial mill will depend on several factors, mainly:
- On the type of raw material, if it is a hard and dry material, of fibrous nature or if it is a heterogeneous mixture to homogenize.
- The particle size of the initial raw material and its particular characteristics.
- The particle size of the final product and the desired particle size distribution.
- Temperature restrictions during the grinding process.
- Whether grinding is dry or requires the presence of liquids.
Variety of industrial grinders available from Foeth
At Foeth we have available a wide variety of pre-owned mills adaptable to the most diverse process and raw material conditions. Among these:
- Hammer mills or impact crushers: they base particle size reduction on repetitive blows with a rotating hammer. They can have a vertical or horizontal shaft and are made of stainless steel for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry.
- Classifying mills: allow precise control over particle size distribution.
- Three-roll mills/crushers: use large smooth rolls to achieve fine grinding of the material by impact and compression.
- Ball mills are rotating equipment with a series of balls of different diameters that generate the impact force and frictional wear to produce the grinding of the material.
- Colloid mills are designed for the preparation of fine emulsions, suspensions, and homogeneous mixtures.
- Jet mills use compressed air streams fed through a series of nozzles to generate impact between particles and achieve particle fragmentation.
