The industrial conical dryer - Description and operation
The conical dryer is a batch contact dryer operating under vacuum conditions. It is ideal for drying powders, pastes and viscous material, especially when they are heat sensitive, contain recoverable solvents or are of a hazardous nature. Unlike other mechanical methods, thermal energy is used to stimulate the evaporation of the liquid as a means of achieving very low residual moisture contents.
The quality and safety of the process is the result of the intense and gentle mixing which is achieved by a rotary agitator (screw, belt or scraper blade) which drives the entire product from the centre of the machine, upwards, moving in the radial and axial directions. This ensures a uniform distribution of moisture and temperature over the entire surface of the product, without degrading or damaging it. Depending on the agitator, some of these units are also known as conical screw dryers.
The agitator circulates the product that is in contact with the hot surface, ensuring a more efficient heat exchange. The speed of the agitator is adjustable, as well as the temperature achieved by the double jacket covering the conical vessel and the operating pressure.
The high vacuum achieved in some of these conical dryers ensures a drying operation at much lower temperatures, minimising the impact on the product.
