How a falling film evaporator works

A falling film evaporator consists of a bundle of vertical tubes in a vertical shell and a lower separation chamber. This type of equipment is also called a falling film, falling stream or trickling film tube evaporator. The fluid to be concentrated is introduced from above into the tube bundle. A vapour flow circulates through the calendar. The liquid descends as a film into the tube bundle under the effect of gravity. On contact with the walls heated by the calendar vapour, the liquid starts to evaporate. Turbulence is created in the thickness of the film, increasing heat exchange and the efficiency of the evaporator. This phenomenon increases as the fluid descends through the tube bundle. The light fraction (or distillate) is finally carried down the evaporator to the separation chamber, where the vapours are discharged and the condensed distillate collected.

Applications of falling film evaporators

Tubular falling film evaporators come in many types and can handle a wide range of liquid concentration tasks by thermal separation. Evaporators can be found in many different industries. The most common uses include:

  • In the chemical industry: fertilisers and pesticides, ammonium sulphate, silicones, vinyl chloride, isocyanates, treatment of waste acids by concentration; in the food industry: production of fruit and vegetable juices, fruit purée, citric acid, starch and xylose production;

  • In the pharmaceutical industry: production of vitamins and many active ingredients of medicines; concentration of dairy products; wastewater treatment and recycling; perfume production.

Foeth offers falling film evaporators of all sizes with heating surfaces ranging from 2 to over 70 m². Filter criteria are available to help you find your evaporator. We provide online quotations and our advisors can be reached by chat. If the equipment you need is not in our stock, we can search for it for you.
